this guide will use the armor rating from science as way to categorize section. It will focalise on 6 slot witch can give speed boost these are: boots, platelegs, chestplate, helmet, off-hand and main-hand.
It is about item with speed boost. This implies that no temporary boost will be talk about even if they exist, like potion or food. No precise direction will be given to keep the challenge. Only the best item of the last class will be kept to compare.
The list are from top to bottom and do not include limited item(like old event or special hunter lodge).This guide will also not put time on enchant like soul speed and depth strider. It will also try to get unbreakable item if possible. The total speed at the end of table are for the top item. The speed of a player is normaly 0.1speed for reference later.
This guide is in fact subjective and is mostly there to guide you in the good direction, if you have comment or thing to critic contact me.

As a great introduction for science it goes whit out saying that the Lost Wood is also a great start for speed item. Unexpectedly not all the item from lost wood are in the dungeon and many item are all around it's area.
The forest set is all in the Castle ruins dungeon each piece give a +0.03speed and is unbreakable.
The Ocean Trencher is in the drowned lake dungeon and is the only item of it's set to have speed it give +0.05speed and is unbreakable.
The Enchanted Sea Gourd and the Magic Wand are in the forest in the area. The Magic Wand give +0.1speed and is unbreakable as it is a blaze rod. The Enchanted Sea Gourd give +0.05speed and is unbreakable.
Whit this I can explain why I chose the Enchanted Sea Gourd over the Ocean Trencher, the reason are preaty simple but they are:
1 The Ocean Trencher is the only item whit speed it it's dungeon so not getting it reduce the number of dungeon require.
2 The Enchanted Sea Gourd is a pupmkin and give infinite breath while Ocean trencher is a leather helmet whit high water breathing.
3 They have the same speed so it isn't a down grade to take one or the other.
item: Dragon Blood
The end is the normal end of Laurasia witch as been modify to include other challenge. The Dragon Blood is from these other challenge it has +0.05speed and is a bow that can bought at the dragon merchand.
I do not recomended going for this item for speed as the magic wand is many time superior and easier to get.
item: Lens of the Watcher
This even is a scavenger hunt that start in front of the creeper bazar the scavenger hunt require some emerald to buy the next clue at each found.
The Lens of the watcher is a clock with +0.1speed in both the off and main hand and is technicaly unbreakable. I recomended using it as an off hand item as there is no other item whit this rank that has the same speed in the off hand.
item: Sæhrímnir Bacon
This item has a +0.1speed in the main hand and a +0.05speed in the off hand. It is a little restricted has it can only be acquire during event night as it can be found in Asphodel. I do recommend it as an main hand item as it is technicaly unbreakable and as the max speed for this rank.

You might wonder why there is no link for the items in the item list and that is because these are a broad category and are not one item each.
The guilds equipment have one of 3 value for speed either: +0.01, +0.03 or +0.05. Now +0.05 seem like realy good, but the problem is the time require to get them. All +0.05speed guild item are master equipment so you need to become a master of the guild and then aquire enought point to buy the equipment. This proces take multiple months and so ain't worth it in my opnion for an item that will be switch in the nexts ranks.

item: Pegasus Boots
So these are in the lost wood why did I not include them in the first section? That anwser is simple they are not entry level requirement to get. They require you to find all of the thing in this group to get the item and missing one mean you have nothing. If you didn't complete the forest set or other item from the lost wood this is a good place to finish as you will not come back here for speed.
This item is the best in slot till the end so I recomend to do it early it give an astounding +0.15speed. It is not unbreakable so make sure to not empty is durability.
I higly recommended it when you are ready to grind for it as nothing is of equal speed and other boots that get close are end gear zone.
I will had that hading soulspeed on it is possible and recommanded
item:wings of Hades
This section is about the specifique of s tier in the hunter lodges. This item is no always avalaible and might require that you wait for the good month chalenge to be on. I will say that if you ain't ready to wait you can try the next tier of item but you might be under level.
The wings of Hades give +0.05speed and are unbreakable, they can be exchange for in the s tier merchant for the hunter lodge. As elytra they are quite good to get if available.
item:Woodhollow Gourd Replica Arsonist's toolkit Replica
These are item that can be bought whit merit voucher in Moosemart. These are item that were accesible during last event and are no more available in any other way. They will have the tag of replica to say they are not from the original event but will mostly keep the same stat as the original
The Woodhollow Gourd Replica is bought for 10 merit voucher, give +0.1speed and is unbreakable but nature. As one of the only way to get that speed and unbreakable on a helmet I do recomended to get it. It is a helmet.
The Arsonist's toolkit Replica is bought for 5 merit voucher, give +0.1speed and is unbreakable. I do not recomend as there is many other item whit that speed for the same slot that require not much time and no merit voucher to get.
item:Replica Grand Master's ChestplateReplica TerrorDactyl Blade
These are item once someone is the master of a guilds these will require long grind to get as previously mention. They are at the guild council at the creeper citadel and not in a world guild.
The Replica Grand Master's Chestplate is a copy of the Grand Master's Chestplate but whit +0.05speed and is unbreakable. It cost 5 blacksmith's council token to get. If you realy want the speed and are already far in guilds I can recommended it, but if you are to far from it I would tell you to wait for the next tier of item.
The Replica TerrorDactyl Blade is a copy of TerrorDactyl Blade that gives +0.1speed and is unbreakable. It can be bought for 1 of each guild's token. As a main slot that is a weapon I can recomended it as no other weapon have this speed, but it require master in all 6 guilds so I will say that it ain't realy need as no speed boost is given from it.
item:Gem of wisdom
This item is acquire in the dominion tower inside the Shattered sand. This unique place is a boss rush where you can decide to do the next one or cash out at every level of it.
The Gem of wisdom is exchange after the floor 15 or whit the floor 16 key, it give +0.1speed and is unbreakable.
I do not recommend it as it ain't an upgrade from last tier, but I mention it for alternative if you don't have any at this point.

item:Mail of the Hero
this item is from hardmode shrine in the Lost Wood. It is a +0.03 speed legs and so it ain't a speed upgrade. It is a defence upgrade from the forest trousers, but I do not recomended it much as it is still hard to get for a defense upgrade on a set of item for speed. If you still don't have the trousers go for it but else then that I do not recomended.
item: Elder Dragon Wings
These wing is acquire whit the advance dragon fight witch is a more dangerous dragon fight. It is realy similar to the wings of Hades but have more defensive stat. I do recomend the switch, but as the wings of Hades or a seasonal event they are your go to if you don't have them. They are unbreakable elytra whit a +0.05 speed boost witch is the best available for the body slot.
item:The Catalyst
This is the first part of the Shoal of the Departed and so the easiest of the hardest part of sciences. You can get many good item here including the Catalyst witch is an off-hand whit +0.1speed, but it give plenty of other stat that are good.
I do recommend it as the Divine Tempest is a need to go farther in rank and so you are close and it is a preaty good item all around.

item:The Mirror
This is a the top of the list as this item is the one key item that make the difference between s and ? tier and so all the other require it. The one and only the Mirror, it is an off-hand whit +0.1speed but I "recommend" it as it is necesary to advance farther in science and is the best off-hand you can get.
Not much else is to be said as others sources are more info on how to get it and prepare for the fight.
item:Dark Realm Leggings
This is the dark realm you can acquire a full set of +0.05speed item from boots to off-hand, but all the other slot then legs are way less usefull as you should have bether already acquire. The Dark Realm Leggings are the best in slot in term of speed and no other item has the same speed for the slot. I do recommend that you acquire them as there is nothing else to go for, the rest of the set is not needed and can be collected as one leisure.
item:Platinum Dragon Claw Earth
This is a set of 2 groups of item they are : the platinum Dragon Claw and the obsidian Dragon Claw. Both set are gotten in Ivaldis Dragon Forge that is under the sky pillar. They all have a bonus of +0.15speed and such are best in slot for the main hand.
The way to acquire them is to upgrade a Dragon Claw at the forge witch will give it many bonus including the speed boost. There is many choise as you can chose between platinum and obsidian and witch type it is of claw.
I do recommend these items as they are best in slot and are good mining tools all around.
item:Grand Master's Chestplate
So this item exist and is a body slot whit +0.1speed, but it cannot be acquire. It is a best in slot for speed but only one will ever exist as the replica do not have the same boost in speed and only the grand master of the crafting guild has it.
There is only 1 in existance and it is in axe_y possesion as he is the grand master of the crafting guild. No other alternative.
